Do you still need antivirus in 2026?

Yes, but what you need depends on how you use your devices. Modern threats rarely look like the viruses of the 2000s. Today’s risks are ransomware that encrypts your files, info-stealers that harvest saved passwords and session cookies, malicious browser extensions, fake software downloads and phishing pages that look exactly like your bank.

Windows already includes Microsoft Defender, and it now performs well in independent tests. A third-party antivirus is worth it when you want stronger web and scam protection, the best possible detection, or extras such as a password manager, VPN, identity monitoring and parental controls. Either way, the single most important protection is keeping your system and apps updated.

Free vs paid antivirus

Free antivirus is no longer second-rate. Avast and AVG earned AV-Comparatives’ Top-Rated award for 2025, and Microsoft Defender scored ADVANCED+ in the February–May 2026 real-world test. What paid plans add is usually not better detection but more tools: ransomware rollback, firewalls, webcam protection, password managers, VPNs, identity-theft monitoring and support.

The trade-off with free products is the business model. Free antivirus companies earn money through upsells, and in 2024 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission fined Avast $16.5 million over the sale of users’ browsing data through a former subsidiary. If you use a free product, review its privacy settings and turn off data sharing you do not want.

Antivirus for Mac, Android and iPhone

How to choose the right antivirus

  1. Start with independent results, not reviews written around affiliate commissions. Look for consistent top scores from AV-Comparatives and AV-TEST.
  2. Count your devices. Family plans covering five to ten devices are often cheaper than separate licences.
  3. Decide which extras you will actually use, such as a password manager, VPN or parental controls, and do not pay for the rest.
  4. Check the renewal price, not just the first-year offer, and turn off auto-renewal if you want to compare again next year.
  5. Consider trust and jurisdiction. Where a company is based, and how it has handled user data, matters for software with deep access to your computer.
  6. Run only one real-time antivirus. Two engines at once cause conflicts and slowdowns.

How we ranked these antivirus programs

This ranking is editorial and independent: no company paid for placement, and there are no affiliate links on this page. We based it on public results from the two best-known independent testing labs:

We weighted protection most heavily, then false alarms and speed, then platform coverage, privacy track record, trust and value. Lab results change every few months, so we review this page regularly. Spot something out of date? Email ceo@marielandryspyshop.com.

Antivirus questions, answered

What is the best antivirus in 2026?

Based on 2025 and 2026 independent lab results, Bitdefender is the most consistent all-round performer, followed closely by Norton and ESET. Kaspersky scores just as well in the labs but carries a trust caveat because of its Moscow headquarters and government restrictions.

What is the best free antivirus?

Avast Free Antivirus and AVG AntiVirus Free (same engine) earned Top-Rated status from AV-Comparatives for 2025. Microsoft Defender, built into Windows, is also a solid free baseline and scored ADVANCED+ in the 2026 real-world test.

Is Microsoft Defender good enough?

For many careful users, yes. Defender now performs well in independent real-world tests. A paid suite adds extras such as a password manager, VPN, identity monitoring and stronger web filtering, and may score higher on speed and advanced-attack tests.

Do Macs need antivirus?

macOS has strong built-in protections, but Mac malware and scams do exist. If you download a lot of software or want web protection, Bitdefender, Norton, Avast, AVG and Kaspersky all won AV-TEST’s Best macOS Security award for 2025.

Do Android phones and iPhones need antivirus?

Android has Google Play Protect built in, and Bitdefender Mobile Security won AV-TEST’s Best Android Security award for 2025. iPhones do not allow traditional antivirus scanning; iOS security apps mainly offer web protection, scam filtering and VPNs. Keeping your phone updated matters most.

Should I avoid Kaspersky?

It depends on your situation. Its lab results are excellent, but its sale has been prohibited in the United States since 2024 and Canada banned it on federal government mobile devices in 2023 over security concerns. Government, defence and critical-infrastructure workers should avoid it; home users should weigh the trade-off.

Can I run two antivirus programs at once?

Do not run two real-time antivirus engines together; they can conflict and slow your computer. It is fine to keep one main antivirus and occasionally run an on-demand scanner such as the free Malwarebytes.

How did you rank these products?

We ranked products on independent lab evidence first: AV-Comparatives’ 2025 Consumer Summary Report and its February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, and AV-TEST’s 2025 awards. We then weighed false alarms, system speed, platform coverage, privacy track record and trust. We do not accept payment for rankings.

Ratings reflect independent lab results available on October 21, 2026. Product names, features and prices change; check each vendor’s site before buying. Marie Landry Spy Shop is an independent research publication and is not affiliated with any antivirus company listed here.
